101, as in Skateboarding 101, is the new weekly lesson session that will be available at The Dept. every Saturday morning. The session runs from 9:00am to 10:00am and includes instruction in all of the basics of skateboarding starting from a beginner level. The lessons will be run in a small group setting and will focus on:
-Understanding the equipment: Deck, trucks, wheels, etc.
-Correct pushing and riding technique
-Basic transition skating: pumping a transition, keeping your speed, dropping in, kickturns, etc…
-Basics of street skating: ollies, tic tacs, boardslides.

It is important to keep in mind that skateboarding is an individual sport and that everyone learns at their own pace. There is no right or wrong way to have fun skateboarding but sometimes a little instruction can help you advance in your riding ability. As with other sports, instruction alone doesn’t guarantee this advancement and really needs to be combined with practice and a willingness to learn as well as patience with your skating. Skateboarding is HARD and expectations should be set with the goal of having fun first and advancing second.

Here’s the breakdown on 101:
-Lessons run from 9:00am-10:00am every Saturday morning.
-You can either drop in or email The Dept. and pre-register. info@departmentofskateboarding.com
-Lesson rate is $30 and includes skating the 10:00am-1:00pm general session.
-Lessons will be given in small groups led by a single instructor with each group.
-Helmets are required and rental will be included in the cost of the lessons if you don’t bring your own.
-Ideally, skaters should bring their own skateboards. There may be a few boards around to borrow but that can’t be counted on.

PRIVATE LESSONS- If you are interested in private lessons you can contact either Jason or Tyler directly and schedule times with them.
